These days, all you hear is cyber-this and techno-that -- and everybody, from Prince to Dylan to Billy Idol -- is putting out CD-ROM's. But a rare few individuals in popular music entered into this New Edge technoculture before all the hype, out of an authentic interest and excitement. Paul Haslinger, formerly of Tangerine Dream, is one of the few.

Future Primitive, Haslinger's first solo release, combines rhythms inspired by L.A. city traffic with scales and tunings from middle-eastern music to create a synthesis of urban hive and spiritual trival vibe. With sampled contributions of Nona Hendryx and Clair Marlo, Future Primitive evokes a uniquely cyber, house-influenced vision of global "world beat" culture.

The notion of the future primitive -- combining a return to a nature-based tribal society with the best that information technology has to offer -- is at the heart of the album. It is also a popular notion at the cutting-edge of cyber culture, advocated by such theorists as Terence McKenna and robotics scientist Hans Moravec.

With a dance mix featuring the vocal gymnastics of Nona Hendryx in the works, Future Primitive will not only please the home-listening audience, it will also provide a lovely ambient buzz for the ravers.

Paul Haslinger worked with Tangerine Dream from 1986 - 1990 and recorded the soundtrack for a host of movie productions, including MIracle Mile and Kathyrn Bigelow's early cult film, Near Dark. He periodically plays with the French experimental, post-ambient band, Lightwave. Born and raised in Austria, he received his classical music training at the Academy in Vienna. His current residence is Los Angeles, California, where he has started his own studio operation, The Assembly Room.
